The monk travelled to the "Western Regions" during the Tang Dynasty, to obtain sacred texts (sūtras). The bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), on instruction from the Buddha, gives this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples - namely Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing - together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's steed, a white horse. These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang as atonement for their past sins.

The computer graphic, I am not expecting Hollywood first class grade but the CG need a total overhaul if they are thinking of making a sequel, which I think they will.
Final thought
There has been dozen of movies remake based on the story of Journey to the west (西遊記). For those who still remember, Steven Chow also have a share in those remake, title A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box (西遊記第壹佰零壹回之月光寶盒) and A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella (西遊記大結局之仙履奇緣), both these movie win numerous award and make Hong Kong movie proud.
2013, Steven Chow have a dip in the story again but this time his role as the director instead. Is not part three, rather a reboot of the story. The movie has Steven Chow signature all over it, you will feel like you are watching "Shaolin Soccer" and "Kung Fu". Steven Chow always embedded his philosophy of life and messages into his work. A good laugh at the movie and yet something to think about while going home.
