I just manage to update my 2 years old iPhone 3Gs to the latest iOS 5. I am impressed as most new features announced are available for 3Gs. Although to enjoy the fullness of iOS 5, you will need the iPhone 4S, that's where Siri will shine :D
Anyway, the update is pretty straight forward and one should be able to DIY. As usual, download the new iTune and iOS 5 image. Actually I finished the download on 12th, when iOS first available but not able to finish the update as iPhone need to get online to be verify for restore?. Since during the first day iOS 5 available, too many people trying to update iOS 5 and cause Apple server to hang (as reported on most forum and website), I am not able to connect and verify my iPhone thus the update failed. Lucky my existing data remain un-touch. I waited until the next day, which is today. The update is a success and a bit slow, but success .... The backup, restore process took me about an 1/2 hour, maybe more. Then iPhone screen will prompt you to read the T&C...a few click for setup new iCloud account, yes iCloud account, free with 5GB storage space and email and my iPhone with iOS 5 is ready to sync my apps for the first time. The apps sync process took about 2 hours..!! but that's maybe its due to my apps collection is huge...about 15GB and my slow and aging notebook and of cause my slow and aging iPhone 3GS. For those who have a small apps collection should be able to get the update done faster. After apps finished sync iPhone will sync your media collection, which I have about 2 - 3 GB. And its done, about 2 hours.... One new feature for iOS 5 is the screen did not lock during the sync process. I can open aps and play around the iPhone while its sync with iTune. I can see the apps and icon slowly populate my iPhone screen.
I am still in the mid of exploring the new iOS 5 feature. The most noticeable changes would the setting menu and its UI, felt simple and clean. Of cause, I already start to like the new notification manager. Work like a charm. A lot of website claim iOS 5 improve iPhone performance. Maybe I should share my experience of my iPhone 3GS iOS 5 on my next posting. Until then, wish you guys all the best during iOS 5 update and enjoy.
