Today I come across a post at cnetasia.com, Intel to add memory controllers, threading in 2008 By Tom Krazit.
In the post, it report :
"Intel also plans to build chips with "point-to-point" links that directly connect processor cores with their neighbors, and install a fast link between the processor and memory with integrated memory controllers, Gelsinger said. Those were two design philosophies used by Advanced Micro Devices to break into the server market with its Opteron chip in 2003. Intel has thus far disdained those approaches.
Not every chip in the Nehalem family will come with all those features, but they will be available to Intel's designers, Gelsinger said. Different customers require various types of products for their future PC and server designs, he said.
For example, Intel's newest best friend, Apple, is pushing the chipmaker to develop chips with a lot of integrated pieces, including graphics controllers, Gelsinger said. Apple's focus on industrial design means it's looking at building ever-smaller systems, and integration is one way to accomplish that, he said. "
[full story]
The story report that Intel will design its future processor having similar architecture like AMD (integrated memory controller and point-to-point transport bridge) and Apple is looking forwards a total integrated solution to build very very small PC. After finish reading the Post, I can suggest at near future, apple might provide MacBook with AMD processor and AMD will have some share at the handhelded processor market (small devices). I always dislike the dominant of Intel at processor market. Although current day it seem that core 2 duo is doing very well, however AMD is not keeping quite and slowly planning for future to strike again. With ATI experience in graphics processor and controller chip, there is no doubt that AMD ATI is capable of making small processor with less power consumption and able to integrating most of the controller into it. Especially graphics and memory... maybe audio and network as well.
I believe the words is very true, "We can only improve if there is a competition". The emerging of AMD make Intel worry and began to make some move. Looking at the world trend right now, I was hopping Sony is able to join the processor fight with its CELL processor. Sony and IBM did some remarkable job with the CELL processor but I guess it still to early to let go of the console market which is doing pretty well with Sony. Anyhow, it doesn't who win, the consumer always being benefits. Cheer
